What Makes Our Jiu-Jitsu Classes Unique?

Brazilian or Gracie Jiu-Jitsu was developed in the 1920s. Today, the martial art consists of over 600 techniques. However, many of these techniques are impractical in real-world combat situations, and modern Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has been shaped largely by competitive fighting.

At New Mexico Jiu-Jitsu Academy, we teach Jiu-Jitsu for self defense, not sport. The Grand Master’s Fundamentals curriculum we teach provides a core education of fundamental techniques that can be used as defense against muggers, rapists and other attackers.

Adult Jiu-Jitsu Program

We teach five core aspects of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu:

  • Striking
  • Clinches and takedowns
  • Surprise Standing Defense against a range of attacks, including edged weapons and handguns
  • Sweeps and submissions
  • Philosophy

The vast majority of BJJ schools today focus only on takedowns, sweeps and submissions – the techniques most often used in competitive sport – while ignoring moves with great self-defense application. Each of our lessons incorporates both standing and ground techniques so that you are prepared for any situation.
