Albuquerque Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Lessons for Children

New Mexico Jiu-Jitsu Academy teaches adults and children the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, also called BJJ or Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Our program is designed to provide practical life skills of self-defense in addition to fitness, self-confidence and more. If you’re looking for martial arts classes for your child, why not try Jiu-Jitsu lessons? We offer a no-commitment 10-day free trial so you can see first-hand what we have to offer and if it’s right for your needs!

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Lessons for Children

Our children’s Jiu-Jitsu program focuses heavily on bullying prevention, providing both physical and mental/verbal self-defense skills. We also modify our curriculum to meet the needs of individual age groups and children:

  • Little Champs is for children from 4-7 years old and focuses on "playing" Jiu-Jitsu. Instead of a more straightforward martial arts training approach, we play games that secretly teach children the foundations of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, allowing them to develop their reflexes and master their bodies so that they will have a solid headstart if they choose to pursue BJJ once they've gotten older.
  • Grapplers is for children from 8-13 years of age. Many are students who graduated from Little Champs; others are just getting started. This program has an emphasis on bully prevention and teaches most of the techniques we teach to adults in our Grand Master's Fundamentals curriculum.
  • Black Belt Club is for promising young students who have mastered the techniques in the Jr. Grapplers club. Admission is on instructor recommendation only, and the class provides a smooth transition into the adult class.

Students can begin taking adult classes at age 14.

Benefits of BJJ for Kids

The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques we teach are primarily defensive, giving our young students the skills they need to neutralize an attacker until help can arrive. We won’t teach striking techniques that a child could use to escalate a fight. This also means there is reduced risk of many common martial arts injuries like broken noses and fingers. But most important, Jiu-Jitsu lessons provide children with a healthy outlet for their energy and a safe space to develop self-confidence and skills that will last throughout their lives.
