Are BJJ or Karate Classes Better for Kids?

Martial arts classes have great benefits for kids: they improve self-esteem, boost confidence, encourage physical fitness and provide valuable self-defense skills. But there are many disciplines to follow. At New Mexico Jiu-Jitsu Academy, we teach Gracie Jiu-Jitsu – a great alternative to karate classes.

Karate vs BJJ

Although it’s common for some parents to lump all martial arts training into the heading “karate classes,” in reality there are many different schools of martial arts that can be studied. Karate itself came to prominence in the 1960s and 70s due mostly to Hollywood depictions and the iconic Karate Kid films. It’s a striking-base style focused on punches, kicks, knee and elbow strikes and open-handed striking.

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, on the other hand, is based on grappling and ground-fighting instead of striking. It is specifically designed to give an advantage to smaller or weaker combatants against stronger opponents, making it especially good for kids. There is also less risk of injuries like broken noses and fingers since there is no striking involved.

Our Children’s Jiu-Jitsu Program

We teach the fundamentals of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to children as young as 4 years old, providing modified and age-appropriate lessons to students at all age and skill levels. You can learn all about our curriculum here.
