Are you considering enrolling your child in martial arts? If so, know that you have more options than you might think. There are many kid-friendly disciplines, and you might find that they’re a good alternative to more well-known martial arts like Karate or Tae Kwon Do.
At New Mexico Jiu-Jitsu Academy, we teach Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to children and adults. Our program is popular among kids and their parents for being fun, practical and mostly non-aggressive – something that can’t be said for a lot of other disciplines!
Tae Kwon Do vs Jiu-Jitsu: Which is Better for Kids?
Tae Kwon Do is extremely popular, and it’s a well-loved sport and after-school activity for many kids. It’s not always the best option for every family, though. Because it is a striking-based martial art, it requires some athleticism to perform correctly, and even the best Tae Kwon Do instructor can’t give a competitive edge to someone without that athleticism. You need strength and speed to accurately land powerful Tae Kwon Do moves, which can be a weakness in a self-defense setting against larger opponents. A lot of parents also are not enthusiastic about their children learning punching and kicking techniques.
The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu we teach at New Mexico Jiu-Jitsu Academy is a more effective form of self-defense for young people since it does not require size or strength to be successful. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu empowers smaller, weaker combatants to neutralize stronger opponents. It’s also more defense-based and relatively non-aggressive. And, because there is no striking in our kid’s classes, there’s less risk of broken noses, fingers and other similar injuries.
