We Teach Gracie Jiu-Jitsu for Self-Defense

Since its inception in the 1920s, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu (also called Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or BJJ) has become popular as a sport, a hobby, a path to fitness and even a way of life. And while there’s nothing wrong with any of that – in fact, we agree whole-heartedly with it! – a lot of Jiu-Jitsu academies overlook the most important part of BJJ: self-defense.

At New Mexico Jiu-Jitsu Academy, we teach Gracie Jiu-Jitsu for self-defense. Instead of focusing on competition-based techniques, we teach practical self-defense moves that you can use in your own life – empowering you against the unthinkable and allowing you to walk with confidence wherever you go.

Self-Defense Classes for Adults and Children

We offer self-defense training for both adults and children. In our children’s classes, the focus is on anti-bullying and ways to neutralize a situation until help arrives. Our adult classes are more in-depth, providing practical self-defense moves for removing yourself from a harmful situation.

Could you fight off a rapist or mugger? If someone grabbed you from behind or pointed a weapon at you, could you defend yourself? When you’ve mastered the skills we teach in our self-defense classes, you can.

What Makes Us Different?

There are over 600 different BJJ techniques, more than anyone could ever master in a lifetime. However, many of these techniques were developed for sports and competition – and they’re the kind of maneuvers you’ll learn at other BJJ schools. We skip the skills that have no practical application and focus instead on self-defense moves that make sense, including standing defense and striking that isn’t taught in any other BJJ school in the city.
