At New Mexico Jiu-Jitsu Academy, we primarily focus on teaching Gracie Jiu-Jitsu for self-defense. However, we also realize that martial arts can provide a valuable path toward fitness – which is one reason why we offer Muay Thai kickboxing classes.
Muay Thai Kickboxing
Kickboxing originated with Muay Thai, a martial art invented in Thailand and practiced predominately for sport. In competition, Muay Thai is a little different from standard kickboxing in terms of what moves are allowed in the ring, but the basic principles of both are the same – and you’ll see a lot of Muay Thai techniques in competitive fighting programs.
Kickboxing Classes for Health
Today, the health and fitness benefits of kickboxing have become well-known, and many people are interested in using it as a form of fitness conditioning. However, kickboxing as a cardio workout ignores the long history of the art form and its techniques.
We seek to put that information back into our kickboxing classes. Although the majority of our Muay Thai students enroll for physical conditioning, not sport, we do spend time teaching the proper form and history of real kickboxing techniques – lessons that reduce injury and provide mental stimulation and challenge as you learn.
